We’ve recently pushed an update to Pin in the Map which makes it easier to add extra pins to your maps.
Now when you click on ‘add extra pin’ you get a helpful little box at the top of the page telling you what to do. You’ll also get a search box, which you can use in the same way as the one on the front page to jump the map around to different points.
This should make adding multiple pins much easier in future. Enjoy!

Holy celebratory trousers Batman! Pin in the Map became one year old today. So, some statistics: in the last year we’ve had the true joy of displaying 24,103 pinned locations, after the furore of the initial launch, we’ve settled to about 100 new pins a day. Most of the visitors we get tend to be from the UK, USA and Japan.
To celebrate the occasion, we’ve added support for proper editing of multiple pins, plus it’s all much more lovely and ajaxy (no more page refreshes for pin modification). We’ve also removed all the scripting to it’s own file, which should make pages load much faster.

You asked for it, we heard you ask for it… we listened and nodded, smiling…
Now we’ve actually done something about it; extra pins that you add to your maps are now deletable.
To do this, select the pin you want to blast out of existence, and click the innocuously named ‘delete’ link at the bottom right of the map. One quick password entry form later and it’s gone for good.
Scary disclaimer: Please don’t delete pins you didn’t mean to, because we won’t be able to easily get them back for you – once it’s gone, it’s gone.
How does this lead to editing, I hear you say? Well, now you can delete extra pins, you can simply remove those you which to change and replace them with pins containing shiny new text, or moved to a different place. Editing nirvana is upon us! We’ve put a special delivery box in the office lobby dedicated to cards, flowers and letters of thanks. Just in case.
By the way, our new and extremely brilliant web developer Tristan has now started, and this was one of the first things he worked on. Now he’s started we’ve more time to work on the project, so expect some more exciting things from Pin in the Map in the near future.

By (very) popular request, we’ve just added support for adding more pins to your existing map.
To do this, click ‘add another pin to this map’ at the bottom right hand corner of your pin’s map, and place your pin where you want it.
Each extra pin gets it’s own description information separate from the existing pin. There’s no support for editing the extra pins at the moment, although that won’t be far behind.
Free pins can have one extra pin on their maps. Unrestricted multiple pins are a premium only option, but premium pins cost just 99p (or a couple of bucks) a month, so you could always spend that trying the new feature out. Hey, it’s less than the cost of a toothbrush and it’s so much more fun…

The most observant of you will have noticed little blue cars appearing on premium pins today. That’s because today we’ve turned on the new automated direction finder feature.
When people visiting your pin click on the little blue car, they’re asked for a starting address and then swept off to the google maps site, which provides them with directions to the pin location. Cool, huh? More information on our faq.
The (slight) catch: you need to be a proud premium pin owner to take advantage of this feature; but hey, they’re only 99p a month…

The prices have been reduced to just 99p a month, or £9.99 a year for UK customers. US and international pricing is now $1.95 a month or $19.95 a year.

We’ve completed the move to the new server. The DNS is updating as I write, but we’re proxying any requests from the old server through to the new one, so you should all be looking at the new server now.
There was only a few minutes of downtime whilst we copied the database across, so hopefully you weren’t affected.
The new server is significantly faster than the old one, and has its hardware managed for us so we don’t need to take a trip to the rack if something breaks. Best of all, it’s mirrored on another server, so that if the whole server decides to check out we’ll be up and running again in a few minutes on a different server. All much shinier.
Big thanks to James Fidell our sys admin for such a smooth move.

We’ve changed the homepage around – we didn’t like all that text, and the examples kinda got annoying.
Oh and we changed the ads back from the square boxes. They sucked.
The up coming big new feature is still in progress. We’ve been superbusy on contract work in the last few weeks, but hopefully it won’t be too long before a preview version will be up and running for a select group of testers…

You might have noticed that Pin editing and previewing has been tricky for a couple of days. Those Eggheads at Google updated their API and changed the way the info boxes worked, which cause a few issues. Updating us to the bleeding edge API fixed it.
If you hadn’t noticed, then just relax…

...and remember, you never read this blog post. Nothing was ever wrong. Pin in the Map has always worked just fine… move along…

We’ve screwed around with the ad placement on some of the information pages today. Sorry if this is irritating, but we think the ads are marginally less irritating now we’ve only got one ad on the page. Two ads just looked messy.
The aforementioned sneak preview is a little closer to fruition. We’re working hard on it now the holiday season is behind us… but progress has been slow going up until now.
We’re planning on releasing a sneak preview to premium pin owners in the near future. More after the jump.
Partly explaining the delay in work over August is the fact that I just bought a new shiny white Macbook. Oh the joy. After decades of Windows programming, and years of frustrated attempts to use Linux as a primary desktop OS, it’s just wonderful to find a unix-based OS that just works.
Oh, and it looks fantastic, too. Even hard-bitten late-night coders are weak-willed when faced such wonders. I find myself hitting F12 repeatedly, just to watch my dashboard transition; I occasionally even Cmd-Esc, to switch to Front Row and back, just for the kick. Never underestimate the power of the swishy.
